Sightseeing and excursions

  • There are lots of destinations for day trips and short walks all around the Youth Hostel. Why not walk along the shore of the reservoir? You can use the ferry service between Kriebstein and Mittweida, with its different jetties (including one at the Youth Hostel). Other excursion ideas include the nearby Rossau water-skiing centre, "Gellert's town" of Hainichen (Camera Obscura), the "Bleiberg Medieval Mountain Town" outdoor museum in Sachsenburg, which also has a castle with the same name, the city of Chemnitz with the Museum of Saxon Industry, Lichtenwalde Castle, Augustusburg with castle, Motorcycle Museum and summer toboggan run, the historic mountain city of Freiberg with its cathedral, or "RIFF"" aqua park in Bad Lausick. / Suggested routes: Area around the dam wall and the medieval Burg Kriebstein (tours available); round trips with passenger ships on the nine-kilometre reservoir; hike via the "Raubschloss" to Ringethal (church with the smallest Silbermann organ); upstream on the Zschopau river via a suspension bridge to the university town of Mittweida (town church, museums of local history and space, hydroelectric power station, town leisure centre, crazy golf) or carry on to the "Alte Hoffnung Erbstolln" silver mine in Schönborn-Dreiwerden (visitors' mine) with guided tour and subterranean boat ride; downstream on the Zschopau river to Waldheim, with the Saxon Prison Museum at Waldheim Prison and the Florena factory (tours can be arranged).
