Welcome to the foot of the Greifensteine!

About 45 minutes' walk from town, at the foot of the Greifensteine rock formation you will find the family-run Ehrenfriedersdorf Youth Hostel. Rock climbing, an outdoor theatre and forest climbing area are literally behind the Hostel. The Greifenbachstauweiher reservoir and Greifenbachtal valley, offering fascinating evidence of this area's mining past, are easily reached via well-signposted walking trails. With reliable snow conditions (700 m above sea level) and 65 kilometres of cross-country trails, this place offers perfect conditions for skiing tours.

The Youth Hostel is located in quiet woodland at the foot of the Greifensteine rock formation.

The Youth Hostel has 39 beds in two to five-bed rooms, plus four seasonal beds (bungalow) from May to September, a dining room and a cosy "Hutzenstube" room (up to 40 people). There is also a children's play area as well as 1 barbecue kiln (up to 30 people).

Sightseeing and excursions

  • Guided walks through the Greifensteine area: Get to know this holiday region on a fantastic hike, discover rare plant species in the Hormersdorfer Hochmoor and learn lots of fascinating facts about subjects ranging from mining to Karl Stülpner. / Big on movies: Trained employees of the Saxon State Film Service show educationally beneficial films tailored to particular age groups on a big screen. / Grind stones: At "Toni's Quartz World" you can learn all about precious and semi-precious stones. Polish your favourite stone or make your own gifts and souvenirs. / High-brow art: We would be happy to organise theatre tickets for you for the Greifensteine outdoor theatre or the Eduard von Winterstein Theatre in Annaberg-Buchholz. / What if there's a fire?!: Ehrenfriedersdorf Youth Fire Brigade pays a visit to the Hostel and you can learn all about the work of Ehrenfriedersdorf Voluntary Fire Brigade. Sit in a real fire engine and learn about the equipment they bring with them. / Mining, the tradition of the Ore Mountains: Visit places where the Ore Mountains were "born". We can organise trips to the visitors' mines "Zinngrube Ehrenfriedersdorf" and "Markus-Röhling-Stolln" in Frohnau. / Interactive astronomy: You and your kids can walk the Drehbach "Planetary Trail" to Drehbach Observatory and discover interesting facts about our universe. / Discover Annaberg-Buchholz: We can arrange a group transfer to the nearest large town, Annaberg-Buchholz. At your own pace you can explore this lovely town and its attractions, including the Adam Ries Museum, St. Anne's Church and the historic market square, which is particularly famous for its Christmas market. / Climb from branch to branch: Take up the challenge and climb through the treetops at the woodland forest climbing centre at the Greifensteine. Securely fastened and in safe hands, trained staff help you to beat various courses - you'll be telling your friends about it for years! / How do you distil spirits?: Visit one of the most famous distilleries in the Ore Mountains and sample their wares. / Four wheels but no roof?: You love motorsports and have always wanted to try out a quad bike? No problem! We can arrange a guided quad bike tour for you, taking you to the nicest parts of the Ore Mountains, such as the Augustusburg. / On foot or by bus?: Regardless of whether you're arriving, leaving or going on a day trip, we are happy to organise a coach for you and your group - getting you safely there and back again.
